Recycled rubber mats are defintiely the way to go for weight room flooring needs. They will protect against any damage a dropped weight might cause. That said there are much cheaper options. Every farm and fleet type store (mill's farm and fleet, tractor supply, Blaine's ect.) sells 4/6' 3/4" cow stall mats (they weight 100 pounds) for 40 bucks. Unless you live in a large urban area (I dunno LA, NY city, San francisco or something) that doesn't have a farm supply store, I'd go with the option that is much much cheaper (especially since you don't have to pay for shipping).
